Overview

Balanced molds for heating, rotation, closing and demolding.

The design must take into account oven, arm, mounting, center of gravity, heat transfer, parting, venting, closing and part extraction.

Problems we solve
Manufacturing large-volume hollow parts
Designing a repeatable closure
Controlling heat transfer
Adapting the mold to the machine’s oven and arms
Making demolding and maintenance easier
In plain terms

Need to make a tank or a large hollow part?

What it is

A rotational mold is a closed metal mold charged with plastic powder, heated while rotating on two axes and then cooled. The plastic coats the inner walls and forms a one-piece hollow part.

What it is for

To produce tanks, containers and large closed hollow bodies, seamless and with uniform walls.

When it is the right process

When the part is hollow and large. For small or medium bottles and containers in high volume, blow molding is usually a better fit.

What Fundimoldes makes

Fundimoldes designs and builds the mold. Tanks are then produced on a rotational molding machine, usually at the customer’s plant or their molder’s. Step by step: how to make a plastic tank.

Variants

Types and scope.

Aluminum molds

Solutions with good heat transfer and weight subject to design. Ideal for: Parts and cycles defined by the equipment.

Steel molds

An alternative for geometries, sizes or conditions suited to sheet metal or welded construction. Ideal for: Tanks, containers and large parts.

Hybrid molds

A combination of materials or components based on thermal, structural and maintenance needs. Ideal for: Special projects.

Tank and container molds

Tooling for hollow volumes and storage applications. Ideal for: Industry, agriculture and consumer goods.

Furniture and technical part molds

Hollow geometries with specific surfaces and closures. Ideal for: Plastic furniture and industrial components.

Workflow

How we work.

01
Part and polymer analysis

We review volume, expected wall thickness, material, texture, inserts and end use.

02
Rotational molding machine survey

We validate oven, swing envelope, arm, mounting plate, mounting, load and cycle.

03
Mold design

We define parting lines, closures, vents, structure, handling and finish.

04
Manufacturing and assembly

We produce the mold in aluminum, steel or a combination depending on the project.

05
Testing and fitting

We verify closing, mounting, demolding and dimensional control according to scope.

Keep in mind

Technical considerations.

Oven compatibility

The overall envelope of the mold and its hardware must fit and rotate without interference.

Mass and balance

Weight, center of gravity and mounting affect safety and behavior during rotation.

Heat transfer

Thickness, material and structure influence heating and cooling.

Venting

It must allow pressure equalization without contaminating or marking the part.
