How to make a plastic tank
Tanks, containers and large hollow parts are usually made by rotational molding, in one piece and without seams. Producing them requires a metal rotational mold, which is what Fundimoldes designs and builds.

The amount of plastic powder that matches the part weight is placed inside the mold.
The closed mold enters the oven and rotates slowly on two axes; the plastic melts and coats the inner walls evenly.
The mold cools while still rotating, opens and the finished hollow part comes out.
Large, hollow parts with uniform walls.
Rotational molding works well for tanks, containers and large closed hollow bodies. For small or medium containers produced in high volume, blow molding is usually a better fit.
Decisions before building.
The size and shape of the tank, the mold material and thickness for heat transfer, the parting line, venting, details for fittings or inserts and mounting on the machine arm. The guide rotational molds: key design decisions covers it in detail.
What information to prepare.
The tank dimensions and capacity, its shape (drawing, 3D model, sample or photos with dimensions), the fittings or openings it needs, the expected quantity and the rotational molding machine data: oven and arm size and clamping system. Technical details are on the rotational molds page.
Common questions.
Does Fundimoldes make the tanks?+
Fundimoldes designs and builds the rotational mold. The tanks are produced with that mold on a rotational molding machine, usually at the customer’s plant or their molder’s.
Can you copy an existing tank?+
Yes. The geometry can be digitized with 3D scanning and rebuilt to design the mold. The customer must be authorized to reproduce protected designs.
Do you repair rotational molds?+
Yes. We provide diagnosis, mold repair and maintenance, including adjustments to closure, parting line and venting.
Tell us which tank you need to make
Send dimensions, capacity, photos or the 3D model and the expected quantity. An engineer replies within 24 business hours.
