3D scanning and dimensional inspection

Part digitization, reverse engineering and comparison against CAD.

3D digitization for reverse engineering, quality control, technical documentation, traceability and CAD comparison of existing parts or molds in service. Final scope is defined based on geometry, material, equipment, volume, tolerances and operating conditions.

Overview

Turn physical geometry into usable technical data.

3D scanning provides an objective basis for reverse engineering, dimensional inspection and documentation. The deliverable is defined by the decision you need to make.

Problems we solve
Digitize a part without drawings
Compare an actual part against its CAD
Document distortion or wear
Create a geometric basis for reproduction
Validate molds, cavities and components
Variants

Types and scope.

3D digitization

Surface geometry capture to generate a digital mesh. Ideal for: Documentation, technical archives and an engineering baseline.

Reverse engineering

Using the scan as input to rebuild surfaces, solids and functional drawings. Ideal for: Spare parts without drawings and obsolete components.

Inspection against CAD

Alignment of the measurement to the nominal model and visualization of deviations. Ideal for: Quality control, adjustments and dimensional acceptance.

Condition analysis

Comparison of used, distorted or repaired parts against an available reference. Ideal for: Maintenance, diagnosis and repair decisions.

Workflow

How we work.

01
Goal definition

We agree whether the project aims to digitize, reproduce, compare, inspect or document.

02
Part preparation

We review access, surface, stability, reference targets and capture conditions.

03
3D capture

We digitize the geometry with a HandySCAN 3D Silver within the recommended range.

04
Processing and alignment

We clean the mesh, organize the data and align it to CAD or agreed references.

05
Delivery

We supply the mesh, agreed CAD formats or a comparison report, according to scope.

Keep in mind

Technical considerations.

Listed equipment

HandySCAN 3D Silver, with a rated accuracy of 0.040 mm and a rated mesh resolution of 0.200 mm.

Recommended range

The recommended range is 0.05 m to 4 m; actual feasibility depends on geometry, access and surface finish.

Formats

We deliver CAD, STL, IGES and STEP as possible outputs, depending on processing scope.

Reading the color map

A deviation map must be analyzed with defined alignment, tolerances and functional references.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions.

Does scanning automatically produce an editable CAD file?+

Not necessarily. Scanning produces measurement data and a mesh; converting them into CAD surfaces or solids is part of a reverse engineering scope.

Can you scan large molds?+

The published recommended range is 0.05 m to 4 m, subject to access, geometry, surface and capture strategy.

What does a dimensional report include?+

CAD comparison, color-map deviation visualization and the agreed results for the areas or dimensions evaluated.

What do you need for a quote?+

Measurement goal, dimensions, material, photos, location, nominal CAD if available and acceptance criteria.
