Rigid polyurethane molds

Insulation, housings and rigid technical components.

Molds for rigid polyurethane injection or pouring, for thermal insulation, technical housings and industrial components with controlled volume and surface finish. Final scope is defined based on geometry, material, equipment, volume, tolerances and operating conditions.

Overview

Volume, closing and surface control for rigid foams.

The mold is defined by formulation, density, expansion, volume, reaction, closing, venting, temperature and final geometry.

Problems we solve
Controlling volume and geometry during expansion

Maintaining or modifying existing molds
In plain terms

What is a rigid polyurethane mold and when is it used?

What it is

It is the tool where polyurethane, injected or poured, reacts, expands and hardens into the shape of the cavity.

What it is for

To produce thermal insulation, technical housings and rigid, lightweight industrial components.

Rigid or flexible?

If the part must be soft and recover its shape, like a seat or support, you need a flexible polyurethane mold.

What Fundimoldes makes

Fundimoldes designs and builds the mold. The parts are then produced with it, usually at the customer’s plant or their molder’s.

Variants

Types and scope.

Insulation molds

Tooling for forming rigid foam around a part, housing or volume. Ideal for: Refrigeration, panels and thermal applications.

Technical housing molds

Forming of components with defined surfaces and closures. Ideal for: Equipment, covers and industrial products.

Lightweight structural component molds

Low-density rigid parts with a geometric or support function. Ideal for: Industrial and assembly applications.

Molds with controlled venting and closing

Configurations adapted to expansion, venting and demolding. Ideal for: Parts with critical volume and finish.

Workflow

How we work.

01
Product characterization

We review the part, PU formulation or system, density, volume, shrinkage and finish.

02
Equipment and process analysis

We validate the injection or pouring method, metering, closing, temperature and handling.

03
Mold design

We define cavity, structure, closing, venting, demolding and surfaces.

04
Manufacturing and assembly

We produce components in aluminum, steel or a combination depending on design.

05
Validation

We check dimensions, closing and the process trial when included.

Deliverables
Technical assessment of the requirementManufactured solution or completed work, per scopeDimensional or functional inspection defined for the projectDocumentation included in the commercial proposalRecommendations for use, maintenance or next steps, when applicable
Keep in mind

Technical considerations.

Expansion and internal pressure

The system’s reaction can exert forces on the mold; structure and closing must be evaluated.

Chemical compatibility

Materials, seals, coatings and release agents must be compatible with the polyurethane system.

Venting

Air and gas evacuation affects filling, defects and finish.

Process trial

It must document formulation, temperature, metering, time, density and acceptance criteria.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions.

Do you make molds for both rigid PU injection and pouring?+

Yes. We handle both processes, subject to evaluation of the system and equipment.

What materials do you use for the mold?+

Aluminum, steel or combinations depending on design, volume, closing and cycle.

Can you make a mold from an existing part?+

Yes, through measurement, 3D scanning and reverse engineering.

Do you include thermal control?+

It can be evaluated based on process and cycle; it must be defined during engineering.
